MOGADISHU —<\/strong> Twelve soldiers serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Wednesday completed a training on aircraft rescue and firefighting, to enhance their ability to respond to aviation emergency situations at the airport.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The eight weeks training conducted in Mogadishu, was facilitated by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and AMISOM in collaboration with Somali Aviation Services and consultancy firm (SAS-CF).<\/p>\n

\u00a0Ahmed Moalim Hassan, the Director-General of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) who officiated at the closing ceremony, noted that trained personnel in rescue and emergency situations were critical for safety of persons and aircrafts and, ultimately, for the airport\u2019s rating.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThe skills you received today are highly needed in Somalia. The aircrafts we can accommodate entirely depends on the fire category classification of our airports,\u201d said the Director-General of SCAA.<\/p>\n

During the training, the officers were taken through a number of modules which included the fundamentals to aviation rescue, firefighting, chemistry of fire, airport familiarization, aircraft construction, basic life support, aviation communication procedures, equipment care, maintenance and inspection among others.<\/p>\n

Col. John Winston Magarura, the AMISOM Deputy Commander of the Ugandan AMISOM contingent challenged the trainees to put the skills they have acquired into practice.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cYou have shown dedication and commitment during the long period this training has been going on. We hope that incase of any emergency, you will practice what you have learnt and save lives,\u201d said Col. Magarura.<\/p>\n

Kuldeep Malik, the Chief Movements Officer of UNSOS said improvements in Somalia\u2019s aviation sector will spur economic growth, create jobs, and facilitate international trade and tourism.<\/p>\n

\u201cMovements of people and cargo have immense and immediate effect in accelerating development,\u201d said Malik who was representing the Chief of Aviation Services at UNSOS.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt is well known that a successfully operating international Airport helps in improving the economy of the town, city or the country where it is located,\u201d Malik added.<\/p>\n
