{"id":7621,"date":"2021-03-08T17:16:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T17:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=7621"},"modified":"2021-03-12T17:20:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T17:20:47","slug":"un-lauds-somali-women-for-peace-contribution-anti-covid-19-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2021\/03\/08\/un-lauds-somali-women-for-peace-contribution-anti-covid-19-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"UN lauds Somali women for peace contribution, anti-COVID-19 efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;<\/strong> The United Nations on Monday lauded Somali women for their huge contributions to peace and development as well as being on the front lines to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement issued in Mogadishu to mark International Women\u2019s Day, which falls on Monday, the UN called for decisive action by Somali leaders to ensure gender equality and full participation of women in all spheres of life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThroughout the years, Somali women have played an extraordinary role in reconciliation, peace-building, and development,\u201d said the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Swan said in his interactions with Somalis, they often tell him that women are the backbone of the Somali society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is time for this to be recognized and translated into concrete actions and opportunities for Somali women to participate in political decision-making and enhance their leadership abilities,\u201d the UN envoy said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The world body also noted the tremendous efforts of Somali women who joined the national response efforts to keep families and communities safe as the country experiences a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhile applauding women\u2019s resilience, we should also remember that in Somalia and elsewhere in the world, the pandemic affects women and girls disproportionately, as they face increased economic uncertainty, violence, and insecurity,\u201d Swan said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said more efforts need to be done in terms of prevention but also to ensure there are adequate services available for victims and survivors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahead of Somalia\u2019s upcoming elections, the world body urged all Somali stakeholders to honor the commitment made to implement the agreed 30 percent women\u2019s quota when electing the representation for the Upper House and 11th Parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: CGTN\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Origin: <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.cgtn.com\/2021\/03\/08\/un-lauds-somali-women-for-peace-contribution-anti-covid-19-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored ugc noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">View original<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOGADISHU &#8212; The United Nations on Monday lauded Somali women for their huge contributions to peace and development as well as being on the front lines to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
