{"id":7616,"date":"2021-03-09T21:21:39","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T21:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=7616"},"modified":"2021-03-12T17:43:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T17:43:38","slug":"iom-relocates-nearly-7000-idps-facing-eviction-in-baidoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2021\/03\/09\/iom-relocates-nearly-7000-idps-facing-eviction-in-baidoa\/","title":{"rendered":"IOM relocates nearly 7,000 IDPs facing eviction in Baidoa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BAIDOA &#8212; <\/strong>The UN migration agency said Tuesday it has relocated nearly 7,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were facing eviction from their homes in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the IDPs were relocated on Sunday to Barwaaqo, a new site for IDPs, in the South West State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The problems that forced them to flee their places of origin are still there, and the majority of the IDPs don&#8217;t have any plans to return,&#8221; Mohamed Abdelazim, IOM Somalia&#8217;s Head of Operations and Emergencies said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Persistent drought, flooding and conflict continue to drive displacement within Somalia and many people crowd into cities and towns in search of basic services,&#8221; Abdelazim added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UN agency said the IDPs were living on private land across 17 informal settlements in Baidoa city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They will join another 6,116 individuals who moved to Barwaaqo previously in 2019, in coordination with the South West State government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the UN, there are currently an estimated 2.6 million IDPs across Somalia while about 360,000 displaced people live in 500 locations in Baidoa, most of them on private land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Relocated families receive cash assistance and a plot of land on which to build new shelters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Each has access to a garden plot to plant and harvest food.
