Hunger, she said, was used as a \u201cweapon of war and conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The award was also a call to the international community to fund the UN agency adequately and to ensure people were not starving, she said. She said the WFP would have been a worthy recipient of the prize without the coronavirus pandemic. But the virus had strengthened the reasons for giving it to the WFP, including the need for \u201cmultilateralism\u201d in a time of global crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very important UN organization. The UN plays a key role in upholding human rights,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cFood is one of our most basic needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In its citation, the committee praised the WFP for its \u201cefforts for combating hunger\u201d and its \u201ccontribution to creating peace in conflicted-affected areas\u201d.
