MOGADISHU —<\/strong>\u00a0 Somali health ministry on Tuesday confirmed 81 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total tally of infections to 1,170.<\/p>\n

Fawziya Abikar, the health minister said the majority of the latest cases were recorded in Banadir with 44, Jubaland with 24, and Puntland with six. Somaliland had five and Hirshabelle recorded two cases.<\/p>\n

She said five patients were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 126. No person succumbed to the deadly virus today.<\/p>\n

The minister said 50 of the latest cases are male while 31 others are female, which are largely due to community transmission.<\/p>\n

She reiterated her call to the Somalis to follow health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health in order to stay safe and contain the spread of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n

The spike in the COVID-19 cases comes at a time Somalia is facing heavy flooding and a threat of desert locust infestation.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that if the virus transmission is not slowed down rapidly, the patient surge and increasing demand for health care will overwhelm the country’s fragile health system.<\/p>\n

The Horn of Africa nation has instituted measures to contain the possible spread of COVID19 including closing schools, banning large gatherings, and suspending international and domestic passenger flights.<\/p>\n
