MOGADISHU —<\/strong> The Somali government has suspended local flights in the country till further notice on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The move is aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus from the capital to the countryside.<\/p>\n

A statement from the ministry of transport and civil aviation noted the airline operators that the ban will take effect on Sunday 29th March.<\/p>\n

Only cargo flights with basic humanitarian supplies like food and medicine will be granted permission but they need to notify the aviation department prior to their schedule.<\/p>\n

The directive urged the crews to follow the guidelines of the ministry of health on their service.<\/p>\n

The suspension comes a week after international flights we\u2019re also canceled.<\/p>\n

So far Somalia has registered three people with COVID-19, two citizens and one foreign national contracted by UN agency in the country.<\/p>\n
