MOGADISHU —<\/strong> A cargo flight carrying protective and medical equipment donated to Somalia by Chinese billionaire and Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma to help it tackle the coronavirus has on Tuesday arrived at Aden Adde international airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

The medical equipment donated includes testing kits, protective clothing, and protective face shields and other medical equipment to battle the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the Horn of Africa nation where decades of violence and lawlessness have left the country with an almost nonexistent health care system.<\/p>\n

The East African country confirmed its first case of COVID-19, the infection caused by the novel coronavirus, mid this month in a student who returned from China and is now in quarantine, according to the country\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n

In a bid to curb the virus\u2019s spread, the Somali government has announced a suspension of all international flights arriving or leaving the country for two weeks.<\/p>\n

It also underlined that humanitarian cargo flights particularly medicine and foodstuff will be granted permission into the airspace.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Somali State Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdulkadir Ahmed-khair Abdi held talks Chinese Ambassador Qin Jian in the capital Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

The officials discussed the developments in containing and combating the deadly Coronavirus.<\/p>\n

The minister said his government is appreciating the humanitarian donation of medical materials from Jack Ma, the founder of China\u2019s e-commerce giant Alibaba to the 54 countries of the African continent to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Ma donated 100,000 masks, 1,000 protective clothing and other materials for each country in 54 African countries, and 20,000 test kits for each African country.<\/p>\n

The materials, consisting of 6 million masks, 1.1 million kits, 60,000 sets of protective clothing, 60,000 protective masks and other items, arrived on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n
