{"id":4465,"date":"2020-03-24T22:43:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T22:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=4465"},"modified":"2020-03-25T07:13:24","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T07:13:24","slug":"who-tb-infections-in-somalia-close-to-40000-in-2019-but-only-half-reported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2020\/03\/24\/who-tb-infections-in-somalia-close-to-40000-in-2019-but-only-half-reported\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO: TB infections in Somalia close to 40,000 in 2019 but only half reported"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;<\/strong> Over 16,000 cases of Tuberculosis (TB) were recorded in Somalia in 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said warning there are many unreported cases in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The global health organization said Tuesday in marking the World TB day there were close to 40,000 new infections in 2019 but less than half of that was reported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBased on recent population data 39,000\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TB?src=hashtag_click\">#TB<\/a>\u00a0infections occurred in the country last year &amp; only 16,907 new TB infections were reported. This means we are missing a large number of cases that go undiagnosed\/unreported,\u201d WHO said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Noting there was a need for solutions to address the underreporting, WHO country director Dr. Mamun Malik said the large numbers of cases remained unattended to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are missing a large number of TB infections that remain undetected and undiagnosed,\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Malik noted there was need to integrate TB control activities such as detection, diagnosis, contract tracing, patient treatment and care into the primary health care systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to WHO, 10 million people fell ill with TB in 2018 with 1.5 million of this succumbing to the disease.
