{"id":4332,"date":"2020-03-08T22:04:24","date_gmt":"2020-03-08T22:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=4332"},"modified":"2020-03-09T13:20:28","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T13:20:28","slug":"un-lauds-contribution-of-women-to-stabilize-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2020\/03\/08\/un-lauds-contribution-of-women-to-stabilize-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"UN lauds contribution of women to stabilize Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;<\/strong> The United Nations senior envoy in Somalia on Sunday lauded the contribution of women towards peace and stability of the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">James Swan, a special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, applauded the role of Somali women in their country\u2019s progress while also encouraging greater efforts to ensure their participation in all spheres of Somali society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSomali women have made important contributions as Somalia rebuilds and continues on its path to peace and stability,\u201d Swan said in a statement issued on the International Women\u2019s Day in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The theme of this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day is \u201cI am Generation Equality: Realizing Women\u2019s Rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey (women) have demonstrated tremendous courage, strength, and dedication in the face of many challenges, including protracted conflict, lack of security, natural disaster, and political instability,\u201d said Swan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UN envoy also encouraged renewed attention by national leaders to the draft Sexual Offences Bill and Female Genital Mutilation Bill, as cornerstones for the protection of women\u2019s rights in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWomen\u2019s equal rights, opportunities, and participation are vital ingredients in realizing the Somali national development agenda. Only collective action by all, including people in power, can make it happen,\u201d said Swan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahead of Somalia\u2019s forthcoming \u201cone person, one vote\u201d elections, the UN in Somalia urged all Somali stakeholders, particularly the political leadership, to support women\u2019s representation in politics and decision-making, and to guarantee that equality becomes a living reality for all Somalis, regardless of their gender.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Swan said the United Nations strongly supports the minimum 30 percent women\u2019s quota for representation in parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUnfortunately, the security discourse around women too often labels them as victims, and rarely as active agents who are vital to improving the security situation for themselves and others.
