{"id":3566,"date":"2019-09-24T21:42:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T21:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=3566"},"modified":"2019-09-25T10:50:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T10:50:57","slug":"un-warns-of-growing-number-of-somalia-refugees-in-ethiopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2019\/09\/24\/un-warns-of-growing-number-of-somalia-refugees-in-ethiopia\/","title":{"rendered":"UN warns of growing number of Somalia refugees in Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU (SoOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned of a growing influx of Somalis that are seeking refuge in Ethiopia amid worsening drought and security woes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith already poor security and now a worsening drought, more than 5,000 Somalis have sought refuge in Ethiopia so far this year \u2013 about four times the total number that crossed the border in search of safety in 2018,\u201d the UN refugee agency said in a statement issued over the weekend, as it emphasized the need to exert concerted efforts to mitigate the challenges that are driving the influx of Somalis into Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCrop failures, livestock die-offs, and Al-Shabab extortion demands are driving thousands of farmers and pastoralists to abandon their lands and seek refuge,\u201d the UNHCR said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMore families are expected to flee to southern Ethiopia in coming months, as the Horn of Africa country faces its worst harvest since the 2011 famine,\u201d it warned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the UN refugee agency, the existing fragile situation in Somalia is \u201cbeing aggravated still further by militant group Al-Shabab, which determines what crops farmers can grow and levies \u2018taxes,\u2019 extortion payments, on already struggling rural communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It also said warned over the extent of the challenge, saying that \u201cUNHCR is increasingly concerned about the risk of climate-related displacement of people, either within their own countries or across borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Muhammad Harfoush, Protection Officer at UNHCR\u2019s Melkadida sub-office, existing insecurity and worsening drought \u201cwere clearly driving the spike in new arrivals to Ethiopia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSecurity remains their strongest concern in Somalia but also, the drought is affecting everybody,\u201d UNHCR\u2019s statement quoted Harfoush as saying, adding \u201cwe are receiving reports from new arrivals about cattle loss, scarcity of water, inability to move around to look for water.
