GALKAYO (SoOHA) –<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Yasmin Abdi Mohamed, a vegetable vendor, has to split\u00a0<\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0small\u00a0<\/span>income between her immediate family and\u00a0<\/span>her displaced\u00a0<\/span>relatives living in a camp in\u00a0<\/span>the northern Somali town of Galkayo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She sends food every week to her brother and parents in\u00a0<\/span>Doha-Mudug camp<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>But the\u00a0<\/span>earnings from her kiosk do not stretch far enough.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have no alternative but to stand firmly and provide food as well as other basic needs\u00a0<\/span>for them\u00a0<\/span>because the conditions in the camps are very hard,\u201d said Yasmin.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I have no other<\/span>\u00a0source of income,\u00a0<\/span>but I will keep on providing as long as\u202fI can, because they do<\/span>n\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span>any other place to go<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many people in urban areas like Yasmin<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0who are being<\/span>\u00a0forced to carry the burden of supporting their\u00a0<\/span>poverty-stricken\u00a0<\/span>kin\u00a0<\/span>after years of\u00a0<\/span>drought.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are\u00a0<\/span>no aid agencies\u00a0<\/span>in this part of the Mudug region helping them out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yasmin\u2019s brother,\u00a0<\/span>Abbas Abdi Mohamed<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0arrived\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Doha-Mudug<\/span>\u00a0camp in 2017 after\u00a0<\/span>losing the entire herd of\u00a0<\/span>livestock\u00a0<\/span>that was their source of livelihood\u00a0<\/span>in Dawga<\/span>n,\u00a0<\/span>a remote rural area\u00a0<\/span>some 90<\/span>\u00a0km\u00a0<\/span>from Galkayo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbas, 34, moved with his\u00a0<\/span>five children and parents to the camp<\/span>\u00a0because they did not know what else to do<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We depend<\/span>\u00a0on what my sister gives<\/span>\u00a0us for survival. After\u00a0<\/span>a few\u00a0<\/span>days,\u00a0<\/span>my wife or I\u00a0<\/span>go to her to get something for the family. She has been supporting\u00a0<\/span>us\u00a0<\/span>for the last two years. She is\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>brea<\/span>dwinner of her family and mine,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Abbas<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbas lost\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0hand 16 years ago\u00a0<\/span>when an<\/span>\u00a0e<\/span>xplosive remnant of war\u00a0<\/span>exploded\u00a0<\/span>while\u00a0<\/span>he was\u00a0<\/span>herding his livestock.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>His disability means he cannot do\u00a0<\/span>most\u00a0<\/span>casual jobs<\/span>\u00a0to earn any income<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have been living in this camp for a long time.\u00a0 I hope for\u00a0<\/span>some support or\u00a0<\/span>restocking of my livestock. My wish is that one day I c<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a0go back to my former life,\u201d he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farhiya<\/span>\u00a0Sa\u2019<\/span>id<\/span>\u00a0Olad\u00a0<\/span>arrived\u00a0<\/span>in the camp two years ago.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0She\u00a0<\/span>is the sole provider\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0her three children, as<\/span>\u00a0her husband divorced her and ceased support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She is\u00a0<\/span>also<\/span>\u00a0being supported by relatives\u00a0<\/span>providing\u00a0<\/span>two meals\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0day for survival.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAbout\u00a0<\/span>10\u00a0<\/span>of my\u00a0<\/span>relatives<\/span>\u00a0living\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Galkayo<\/span>\u00a0have taken<\/span>\u00a0shared\u00a0<\/span>responsibility for providing me\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>food. We have nothing here<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so without their support, I don\u2019t how my life would be,\u201d said Farhiya<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She came from the rural area of\u00a0<\/span>Degari<\/span>, where they lost<\/span>\u00a0150 goats and a camel<\/span>\u00a0to drought<\/span>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he camp\u00a0<\/span>has experienced\u00a0<\/span>water shortages for\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>long time.\u00a0<\/span>Farhiya\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0to make do with\u00a0<\/span>20 litre<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of water\u00a0<\/span>bought<\/span>\u00a0from a nearby\u00a0<\/span>well for<\/span>\u00a02,000\u00a0<\/span>Somali shilling<\/span>s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>re are no\u00a0<\/span>health facilities\u00a0<\/span>or school in the camp and no regular aid.<\/span><\/p>\n
