DUSMAREB (SoOHA) –<\/strong>\u00a0 Drought-hit f<\/span>amilies in\u00a0<\/span>remote parts of\u00a0<\/span>Galgadud region\u00a0<\/span>have welcomed an emergency water trucking service that\u00a0<\/span>has saved them from having to move to other places in search of water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has\u00a0<\/span>hired\u00a0<\/span>200 tankers to deliver water to 1,480\u00a0<\/span>badly affected\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0eight<\/span>\u00a0villages<\/span>:<\/span>Shilin-Wayne, Burdir, Meygag, Lan-aduray, Qurar, Habasley, Laan-Marer and Ardo<\/span><\/p>\n

In Habasley<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>90<\/span>\u00a0km from Adado town, about 300 families have been without water for months<\/span>. Failed rains have left\u00a0<\/span>reservoirs and boreholes\u00a0<\/span>dry with the distressed families considering migrating.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since late July,\u00a0<\/span>a tanker has made 27 deliveries of\u00a0<\/span>water to\u202fHabasley<\/span>, says\u00a0<\/span>Shukri Mohamed Ali<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>who is counting because it has been a lifeline for her family.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We are now relieved as we have water for our families and livestock. People were very desperate but now\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>hopes have been restored and we\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t have to\u00a0<\/span>mov<\/span>e anywhere else in search of water,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said the mother of nine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shukri\u2019s family has only 20 goats\u00a0<\/span>left<\/span>, having lost<\/span>\u00a0180 goats<\/span>\u00a0in the drought in 2017<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe area has received 1,350 barrels\u00a0<\/span>in the<\/span>\u00a0last two\u00a0<\/span>weeks<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The e<\/span>lders distribute the water among the families,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ilyas Sheikh Ibrahim<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0h<\/span>ead of NRC in Galmudug and Hiran,\u00a0<\/span>told Radio Ergo the<\/span>ir response was based on a survey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>W<\/span>e discovered\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>some villages were facing acute water shortages and families were moving out so we decided to distribute water to them,\u201d said Ilyas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abdullahi\u00a0<\/span>Ibrahim Ahmed<\/span>\u00a0is a member of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>traditional elders\u00a0<\/span>committee\u00a0<\/span>assigned to manage water delivered to Qurar village<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a075<\/span>\u00a0km from Adado.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He sa<\/span>id<\/span>\u00a060 of the 200 families in the village fled in late June and early July\u00a0<\/span>due to severe water shortages.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 10<\/span>\u00a0water\u00a0<\/span>reservoirs<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>village\u00a0<\/span>have been\u00a0<\/span>filled\u00a0<\/span>up 13 times already.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We divided the villagers into groups and each group\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>allocated<\/span>\u00a0the use of one of the reservoirs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Each family gets 45 litres a day,\u201d Abdullah<\/span>i explained.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the water delivery, the villagers used to buy one barrel of water at 120,000 Somali shilling (<\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0dollars).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
