LAS ANOD<\/strong> (SoOHS) –<\/strong> Ahmed Osman,\u00a0<\/span>who lives in\u00a0<\/span>Hol<\/span>hol<\/span>\u00a0village in\u00a0<\/span>Jidiink<\/span>a-dod<\/span>h<\/span>a<\/span>da<\/span>\u00a0valley\u00a0<\/span>in northern Somalia\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Sool<\/span>\u00a0region, tu<\/span>ned in to Radio Ergo\u00a0<\/span>on 27<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0May\u00a0<\/span>and heard\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>weather forecast\u00a0<\/span>that made him take immediate action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Wahar<\/span>-iyar<\/span>ashe<\/span>\u00a0stream near his home was\u00a0<\/span>filling up as the heavy\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Gu<\/span><\/i>\u00a0rains pounded the area.<\/span>\u00a0The broadcast carried a warning of impending floods as the water was rising above the banks of rivers and streams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahmed and over\u00a0<\/span>100<\/span>\u00a0other families evacuated\u00a0<\/span>their houses\u00a0<\/span>af<\/span>ter hearing the weather warning, as he explained later to our\u00a0<\/span>local\u00a0<\/span>reporter:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>That day, I was listening\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>Radio Ergo as usual when I heard something\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0attracted my attention. It was\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0weather forecast warning the locals in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>area to keep away<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0the streams as torrential rains co<\/span>uld cause the streams to flood,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Ahmed<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0who has been an avid listener of<\/span>\u00a0Radio Ergo\u00a0<\/span>for the last seven years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A few da<\/span>ys after Ahmed<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s family and his neighbours shifted from the valley,\u00a0<\/span>Wahara-iyarshe<\/span>\u00a0stream\u00a0<\/span>did indeed breaks i<\/span>ts bank<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0flooding a wide area<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>benefited<\/span>\u00a0and got advice\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0broadcasts for the period we have\u00a0<\/span>been\u00a0<\/span>listening\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>Radio Ergo programmes. We were given rescue and\u00a0<\/span>evacuation skills and informed to seek refuge on<\/span>\u00a0high ground areas,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he explained.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span>ome families\u00a0<\/span>ignored<\/span>\u00a0or did not hear\u00a0<\/span>the warning and<\/span>\u00a0were<\/span>\u00a0cut off\u00a0<\/span>by the\u00a0<\/span>floods<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I a<\/span>m aware of\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>\u00a0family\u00a0<\/span>that was<\/span>\u00a0cut off\u00a0<\/span>in the\u00a0<\/span>area for about a week after the stream flooded<\/span>. A<\/span>fter that week, the<\/span>y were<\/span>\u00a0rescued by over\u00a0<\/span>100<\/span>\u00a0people who joined hands to w<\/span>ade\u00a0<\/span>through\u00a0<\/span>the floods,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Ahmed said<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I thank Radio Ergo\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>equipp<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0me<\/span>\u00a0with information<\/span>\u00a0and help<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0my family because if I had<\/span>\u00a0not listen<\/span>ed to the<\/span>\u00a0programme, my family would have suffer<\/span>ed<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahmed recalled<\/span>\u00a0heavy floods\u00a0<\/span>in the valley in 2004 that\u00a0<\/span>kill<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a050\u00a0<\/span>animals<\/span>\u00a0and destroyed property<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>at a time\u00a0<\/span>when there was no<\/span>\u00a0information\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>warning<\/span>\u00a0system available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
