{"id":3307,"date":"2019-07-19T22:59:58","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T22:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=3307"},"modified":"2019-07-20T08:11:25","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T08:11:25","slug":"self-made-somali-businessmen-work-their-way-up-out-of-the-idp-camps-in-buhodle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2019\/07\/19\/self-made-somali-businessmen-work-their-way-up-out-of-the-idp-camps-in-buhodle\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-made Somali businessmen work their way up out of the IDP camps in Buhodle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BUHODLE (SoOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> Radio Ergo\u2019s IDP camp series\u00a0this week explores the hard road to success for two men displaced from their homes respectively by conflict and drought, who set up their own businesses in\u00a0Buhodle\u00a0in northern Somalia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After\u00a012 years\u00a0living in a\u00a0shabby\u00a0IDP camp,\u00a0Yussuf\u00a0Omar Mohamed\u00a0can finally say he is living comfortably as a\u00a0self-supporting\u00a0businessman in\u00a0the northern Somali town of\u00a0Buhodle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yussuf\u00a0fled\u00a0conflict\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Somali capital, Mogadishu, and settled in\u00a0Seweto\u00a0camp.\u00a0Every day was a challenge to earn a decent living in an unfamiliar place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen I got here I didn\u2019t know anybody. Life was\u00a0up and down. When you\u2019re new to a place, you face many challenges,\u201d\u00a0Yussuf\u00a0told Radio Ergo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He tried several jobs from the waiter, cook to\u00a0porter until he finally landed\u00a0a\u00a0job at a bakery in town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over nine years,\u00a0he\u00a0put away small portions of his salary as savings\u00a0until\u00a0eventually, he\u00a0had\u00a0saved\u00a0enough money to\u00a0buy\u00a0the\u00a0bakery\u00a0where he was working.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u00a0always had\u00a0the ambition to stand on my\u00a0own\u00a0feet and become stable. To fulfill that dream, you need be patient\u00a0with all the\u00a0challenges,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI had\u00a0$2,000,\u00a0but was\u00a0short of\u00a0$1,000\u00a0more\u00a0I needed\u00a0to buy the bakery. I signed an agreement\u00a0with the owner\u00a0to pay\u00a0him\u00a0the remainder\u00a0little by little,\u00a0and in this way,\u00a0I started my first business,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bakery\u00a0grew\u00a0and he employs\u00a014\u00a0people\u00a0from the host\u00a0and\u00a0IDP\u00a0camp\u00a0communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yussuf\u00a0has moved his family of seven\u00a0out of the camp\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0two-bedroom\u00a0house in\u00a0Waberi\u00a0neighborhood,\u00a0rented for\u00a0500,000 shillings\u00a0($30).\u00a0\u201cLiving in my own house, I now\u00a0feel comfortable,\u201d\u00a0he boasted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, from\u00a0Bala\u2019d\u00a0in southern Somalia\u2019s Middle\u00a0Shabelle\u00a0region,\u00a0Abdullah Nur Moalim fled\u202fto the north\u00a0in 1994\u00a0and also ended up in\u00a0Buhodle, after spending 10 years in\u00a0Bossaso.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like\u00a0Yussuf,\u00a0Abdullahi\u00a0has raised himself up to become an independent businessman. He\u00a0owns a workshop in town and has\u00a0bought\u00a0a\u00a0house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy family\u00a0and I\u00a0came to\u00a0Buhodle\u00a0in 2004 with nothing,\u201d Abdullahi told Radio Ergo.\u00a0\u201cInitially I was living in the camp before moving to a rental house. Now I live in my own house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abdullahi commends the host community\u00a0for\u00a0being hospitable and\u00a0allowing\u00a0IDPs to integrate with them without discrimination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Radio Ergo\u2019s local\u00a0correspondent,\u00a0around\u00a050 families\u00a0have\u00a0moved out of the camps in the town to integrate with the local community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buhodle\u00a0hosts two IDP camps,\u00a0Seweto\u00a0and\u00a0Shangale,\u00a0set up\u00a0in 1995.\u00a0Most\u00a0of the IDPs\u00a0survive doing odd jobs\u00a0in the town.\u00a0 Support\u00a0from\u00a0aid\u00a0agencies is minimal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Children from\u00a0Seweto\u00a0go to school on the other side of the border in\u00a0Ethiopia,\u00a0while\u00a0those in\u00a0Shangale\u00a0attend a\u00a0free\u00a0community\u00a0primary\u00a0school\u00a0in\u00a0Barwako\u00a0neighborhood.\u00a0Most\u00a0of those\u00a0living in\u00a0Seweto\u00a0came from southern Somalia,\u00a0while those in\u00a0Shangale\u00a0were displaced\u00a0by drought\u00a0from parts of the surrounding\u00a0region.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: Radio Ergo<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BUHODLE (SoOHA) &#8211; Radio Ergo\u2019s IDP camp series\u00a0this week explores the hard road to success for two men displaced from their homes respectively by conflict and drought, who set up their own businesses in\u00a0Buhodle\u00a0in northern Somalia.
