MOGADISHU (SoOHA) –<\/strong> Hussein\u00a0<\/span>Mudey<\/span>\u00a0has hit on a successful way to earn a living, as well as enhanc<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the environment, by selling small trees and pot plants in Mogadishu.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The father of three\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>Afgoye<\/span>, in Lower\u00a0<\/span>Shabelle<\/span>\u00a0region, can be seen\u00a0<\/span>pushing his wheelbarrow<\/span>\u00a0loaded with\u00a0<\/span>young trees\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0pot\u00a0<\/span>plants in\u00a0<\/span>bags\u00a0<\/span>around the streets of Mogadishu, selling to hotels,\u00a0<\/span>office<\/span>s<\/span>, and ho<\/span>me-owners.<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span>e began trying to sell trees and plants in\u00a0<\/span>Afgoye<\/span>\u00a0but did not do very well<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I moved my business from\u00a0<\/span>Afgoye<\/span>\u00a0because there was no<\/span>\u00a0market<\/span>\u00a0there. T<\/span>he family’s daily\u00a0<\/span>food needs<\/span>\u00a0and the school fees were hard to meet<\/span>, so<\/span>\u00a0it was discouraging there,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Hussein<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, h<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>received\u00a0<\/span>an order to supply trees to a customer in Mogadishu<\/span>\u00a0three months ago.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0One\u00a0<\/span>tree\u00a0<\/span>sells for two\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0three\u00a0<\/span>dollars in Mogadishu<\/span>, compared to half a dollar in\u00a0<\/span>Afgoye<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDe<\/span>mand is high in Mogadishu. After\u00a0<\/span>my<\/span>\u00a0first delivery in Mogadishu, several other people asked for more<\/span>\u00a0plants<\/span>. T<\/span>hat is when I\u00a0<\/span>realized<\/span>\u00a0there was\u00a0<\/span>a good\u00a0<\/span>market here,<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Hussein told Radio Ergo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He has a small nursery near where he lives, so after making sales in the morning he goes home to plant and tend his trees in the afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has been making $10-30 a day.<\/span>\u00a0With this income, h<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0children started going to\u00a0<\/span>school\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>Koranic<\/span>\u00a0classes<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0After\u00a0<\/span>paying\u00a0<\/span>the $<\/span>30 school fees<\/span>, he\u00a0<\/span>buys food for\u00a0<\/span>family and\u00a0<\/span>manages to put<\/span>\u00a0some\u00a0<\/span>money\u00a0<\/span>aside monthly as savings.<\/span><\/p>\n
