KISMAYO (SoOHA) –<\/strong> <\/span>University staff and students\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Kismayo<\/span>\u00a0have treated hundreds of low income people at a free medical camp in three villages that lack access to health services.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A team from\u00a0<\/span>Plasma University in\u00a0<\/span>Kismay<\/span>o<\/span>\u00a0conducted free diagnosis and treatment for 540 people in the villages of\u00a0<\/span>Bulabartire<\/span>, Istanbul,\u00a0<\/span>Khamkham<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Yontoy<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shukri<\/span>\u00a0Abdullahi Abdi and her\u00a0<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>children\u00a0<\/span>were among<\/span>\u00a0those treated by the medics in Istanbul village,\u00a0<\/span>25<\/span>\u00a0km from\u00a0<\/span>Kismay<\/span>o<\/span>, where there is\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>o health pos<\/span>t<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0<\/span>three children who ha<\/span>d been\u00a0<\/span>sick for three days were diagnosed with malaria and treated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0As she is\u00a0<\/span>pregnant<\/span>, she underwent ante-natal\u00a0<\/span>check<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>received\u00a0<\/span>vitamins.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I had no money to take my children to\u00a0<\/span>Kismay<\/span>o<\/span>\u00a0for treatment<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but I can say these are\u00a0<\/span>God-sent<\/span>\u00a0messengers,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shukri<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0family has<\/span>\u00a0only 30 goats\u00a0<\/span>left\u00a0<\/span>after losing<\/span>\u00a040 goats and 20 c<\/span>ows to\u00a0<\/span>drought in 2016.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hafido<\/span>\u00a0Ahmed Abdullahi<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Bulabartire<\/span>\u00a0village 20<\/span>\u00a0km\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>Kismay<\/span>o<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>took her\u00a0<\/span>son<\/span>\u00a0and two\u00a0<\/span>daughters<\/span>\u202fto the\u00a0<\/span>camp<\/span>\u00a0for malaria and\u00a0<\/span>skin infection<\/span>\u00a0treatment<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The childre<\/span>n were treated and the\u00a0<\/span>girls were given\u00a0<\/span>antibacterial<\/span>\u00a0soap<\/span>\u00a0and ointment. They were s<\/span>cratch<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0their skin\u00a0<\/span>and making wounds\u00a0<\/span>but now they are\u00a0<\/span>better<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said\u00a0<\/span>Hafida<\/span>.\u00a0 She\u00a0<\/span>takes<\/span>\u00a0care of<\/span>\u00a0five children\u00a0<\/span>after\u00a0<\/span>divorcing<\/span>\u00a0two years ago<\/span>, and earns a living from a\u00a0<\/span>small restaurant in the village<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Mo<\/span>hamed Hassan Nur<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0who\u00a0<\/span>headed<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>camp<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0said<\/span>\u00a0200 people from the villages received malaria treatment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0They also created\u00a0<\/span>awareness on treatment\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0malaria, pneumonia and skin infections\u00a0<\/span>and distributed\u00a0<\/span>mosquito nets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he university carried out the\u00a0<\/span>exercise\u00a0<\/span>in coordination with\u00a0<\/span>Jubbaland<\/span>\u00a0h<\/span>ealth ministry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Nur<\/span>\u00a0said the exercise would be conducted regularly due to the\u00a0<\/span>demands they witnessed\u00a0<\/span>among<\/span>\u00a0the community in the villages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The students rai<\/span>sed\u202f$2,500\u202fto run the\u00a0<\/span>free treatment camp<\/span>\u00a0and distributed 180 mosquito<\/span>\u00a0nets among the villagers<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he explained.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jubbaland<\/span>\u00a0heal<\/span>th ministry coordinato<\/span>r,\u00a0<\/span>Mohamed Sheikh Adan<\/span>, praised the initiative.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The doctors who work at the\u00a0<\/span>u<\/span>niversities and their students can take part in the efforts\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>sa<\/span>ve lives. This could be one way<\/span>\u00a0to serve our people,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
