GALKAYO (SoOHA) –<\/strong> An acute water shortage in a<\/span>\u00a0village\u00a0<\/span>in central Somalia\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Mudug<\/span>\u00a0region\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>affecting more than<\/span>\u00a01,000<\/span>\u00a0families<\/span>, some of whom have left their homes in search of water<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hirsi Omar Hassan,\u00a0<\/span>the chief of\u00a0<\/span>Tulo-Barwaqo<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0borehole\u00a0<\/span>pump\u00a0<\/span>broke down two weeks ago and\u00a0<\/span>could not be repaired<\/span>. They tried to raise money locally but the price for a new pump was out of reach at\u00a0<\/span>$40,000<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Hirsi sa<\/span>id the v<\/span>illagers survive<\/span>, mostly pastoralists, had the option of buying water trucked in from<\/span>\u00a0Galdogob<\/span>\u00a0town<\/span>, 34 km away<\/span>, or moving away.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>When the pump was<\/span>\u00a0in operation we had<\/span>\u00a0water free<\/span>\u00a0of charge\u00a0<\/span>but<\/span>\u00a0people have been forced to contribute money to pay for the tanker.<\/span>\u00a0W<\/span>ater is very scarce,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0the chief said.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>village\u00a0<\/span>borehole\u00a0<\/span>normally supplies\u00a0<\/span>several other\u00a0<\/span>villages<\/span>\u00a0in the area\u00a0<\/span>as well.<\/span>\u00a0Water is selling at $7 for 200\u00a0<\/span>litres<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farhiya<\/span>\u00a0Ahmed Mohamud,\u00a0<\/span>who is seven months pregnant, walked all day and night with her 10 children to reach<\/span>\u00a0Hero-<\/span>Jalle<\/span>\u00a0village, the nearest<\/span>\u00a0source<\/span>\u00a0of free water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>L<\/span>ife\u00a0<\/span>in our village\u00a0<\/span>was miserable<\/span>. Y<\/span>ou\u00a0<\/span>could hardly get water to drink<\/span>, let alone washing and bathing<\/span>. Although w<\/span>ater<\/span>\u00a0is supplied by tankers you\u00a0<\/span>have to pay cash, they won\u2019t give credit.\u00a0<\/span>I had no\u00a0<\/span>cash so\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0decided to<\/span>\u00a0move,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said\u00a0<\/span>Farhiya<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Only 10 of her family\u2019s herd of 200 animals survived the 2016-17 drought.<\/span>\u00a0She said about\u00a0<\/span>80 families\u00a0<\/span>had made the same move to find water but they were not running short of food.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Though<\/span>\u00a0we get adequate water,<\/span>\u00a0life is hard<\/span>. F<\/span>or the last six days, I\u00a0<\/span>have been<\/span>surviving<\/span>\u00a0on the<\/span>\u00a0little food I had\u00a0<\/span>with me\u00a0<\/span>but it\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>about to get finish<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0and all\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>other families are\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>same,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she\u00a0<\/span>told Radio Ergo<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Ab<\/span>di<\/span>\u00a0Jama\u2019<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0Yussuf<\/span>\u00a0is still in\u00a0<\/span>Tulo-Barwaqo<\/span>\u00a0with his nine-member family but is preparing to move<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I ha<\/span>ve just<\/span>\u00a0$75<\/span>\u202fwhich I saved\u00a0<\/span>from the\u00a0<\/span>Care International\u00a0<\/span>cash distribution I had\u00a0<\/span>for six months<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The cash programme stopped in May,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I know if I spend the little money\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0I will not get\u00a0<\/span>water\u00a0<\/span>from the tankers\u00a0<\/span>on credit\u00a0<\/span>so I have to move with the livestock and the children,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Abdi,\u00a0<\/span>who has 150\u00a0<\/span>goats<\/span>\u00a0and two bull camels he use<\/span>s<\/span>for transport.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gal<\/span>dogob<\/span>\u00a0district secretary, Bashi<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0Mahamud<\/span>\u00a0Mohamed<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0told Radio Ergo that\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>authorities\u00a0<\/span>were<\/span>\u00a0aware of the situation<\/span>\u00a0and had\u00a0<\/span>met\u00a0<\/span>technical officers<\/span>\u00a0from\u202fPuntland State Agency for Water Energy and Natural Resources and the interior ministry<\/span>\u00a0to seek<\/span>a solution.<\/span><\/p>\n
