{"id":2421,"date":"2019-02-11T22:09:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T22:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=2421"},"modified":"2019-02-13T09:20:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T09:20:56","slug":"youth-volunteers-clean-up-unseemly-garbage-in-hingalol-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2019\/02\/11\/youth-volunteers-clean-up-unseemly-garbage-in-hingalol-village\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth volunteers clean up unseemly garbage in Hingalol village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>LAS ANOD (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> A clean-up campaign by youth in Hingalol village in northern Somalia\u2019s Sanaag region is fast transforming the once dirty streets and inspiring locals to keep their environment clean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clean-up launched last month is attracting many volunteers intent on taking responsibility for their environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahmed Bile Ismail, one of the volunteers, has loaned his truck to collect garbage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is voluntary work \u2013 we stood up to show our people the value of keeping our village clean. There are some roads that are actually cut off by heaps of garbage and \u2018Garanwaa\u2019 trees (parasite bushes),\u201d Ismail told Radio Ergo.\u201cWe began going around the village telling residents to put their rubbish in one location so that it can be collected from those points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahmed, a father of three, said the area has no local government cleaning department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI decided to offer my truck to the group. The bad conditions in the village made me join in the exercise to clean up the village,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yussuf Farah Saed, Hingalol chief, said he is impressed by the results of the campaign using simple tools and hard work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMuch of the waste has been collected from the village especially during clean-up days. The youth also cut trees that blocked the roads in the village and that made people able to use roads that had not been open for a long time,\u201d the chief said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mohamed Ali Shire, a local doctor, welcomed the clean-up campaign noting the move played a very important role in reducing outbreaks of disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMost of the villagers complain regularly about stomach illnesses. In January, we treated 20 people with diarrhea.\u00a0 This could be attributed to the lack of hygiene,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The residents have also lauded the move to clean the village. Rukiyo Issa Osman said the campaign has transformed the village.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe village was very dirty, but this move is making it into an appealing area.
