{"id":2208,"date":"2018-11-29T22:03:21","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T22:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2018-12-02T06:11:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-02T06:11:03","slug":"parents-resort-to-home-remedies-as-whooping-cough-spreads-in-burao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/11\/29\/parents-resort-to-home-remedies-as-whooping-cough-spreads-in-burao\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents resort to home remedies as whooping cough spreads in Burao"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BURAO (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> Over 40 cases of whooping cough (also known as pertussis) have been reported in Odanle village, 180 km south of Burao, Togdher region, in November.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suleiman Hassan Abdi, an official from Somaliland\u2019s health ministry, confirmed the outbreak of the respiratory infection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFamilies including adult and children have been affected and there is an urgent need of a quick response,\u201d said Suleman, who is head of vaccination campaigns in Qorilogud, Balidig and Odanle localities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asad Hassan Jam\u2019a, who led a team from the Somaliland Red Crescent conducting a survey on communicable disease in several villages in the region, told Radio Ergo that the disease had affected 48 people, mostly children, in Odanle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have seen many children with a persistent cough.\u00a0 At the time, we had no medicines with us so we registered the names of the children and their ages. Most of those affected are small children,\u201d Asad said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Abdi Mohamed Ali, who operates the only pharmacy in Odanle, said whooping cough had been spreading for three weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn the last three days, 12 children have been diagnosed with the infection. I have no antibiotics here so I can only prescribe painkillers for the patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He attributed the outbreak to poor levels of routine immunization of children and inadequate health mobilization activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPreviously it was uncommon to see adults affected by such a disease but many of them are infected. There is no health post here. \u00a0I have only this small pharmacy which cannot cover the medical needs of the village,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahmed Ismail Hassan, whose five children have whooping cough, has been using honey and soup to treat the children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have nowhere to take them for treatment; the nearest hospital is two hours\u2019 drive from here. I opted to use this method as their health started deteriorating,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Riyad Jama\u2019a Ahmed has been nursing her four sick children for three weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAt first, the children had a persistent cough and fever.
