{"id":2131,"date":"2018-11-08T22:43:31","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T22:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=2131"},"modified":"2018-11-13T06:24:15","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T06:24:15","slug":"sanag-displaced-families-from-clashes-in-ethiopia-struggle-in-rain-soaked-shanties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/11\/08\/sanag-displaced-families-from-clashes-in-ethiopia-struggle-in-rain-soaked-shanties\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanag: Displaced families from clashes in Ethiopia struggle in rain-soaked shanties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SANAG (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> Displaced families from the Somali region of Ethiopia living on the outskirts of Badhan\u00a0town in northern Somalia\u2019s Sanag region are surviving under difficult conditions without access to food and proper shelter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 27 families, who fled from conflict between Somalis and Oromos in eastern Ethiopia, have been in Badhan since September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Muhibo Ali Ibrahim and her six children fled their home in Jina\u2019asani village on the border between Somali and Oromo states in Ethiopia in September, after a conflict broke out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After trekking for days, she arrived in Lako village near Badhan town, where she built a make-shift hut from clothes and sticks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The shelter she now calls \u2018home\u2019 has been saturated in the ongoing rain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe live a miserable life; this shack cannot shelter us from the rain and the cold. Me and my children have slept in this leaking hut as rain pounds the area, and all our foodstuff is soaked,\u201d Muhibo told Radio Ergo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saeed Mohamed Salah, an official from Puntland\u2019s Refugee and IDP Affairs Committee, told Radio Ergo that the families displaced were not receiving any assistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThese people face dire conditions, they live in shanties. They neither have blankets nor food and the host community has nothing to offer them. They need urgent support,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abdi Ahmed Dahir, a father with two children, left his wife and his parents in Jigjiga town in Ethiopia. He has been living with his children in Lako village in Badhansince September. He now wants to bring his other family members over the border if he canget money for their travel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Abdi, the journey took them two nights and two days. He does not wish to return to Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have peace here. I do not know if I would return to Ethiopia. Although I had a livelihood there,the area is engulfed by clashes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">None of the families say they have any intention of returning to Ethiopia at the moment, as the conflict has not yet been resolved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deadly clashes broke out in the Somali-Oromo border townsin September 2017 and resumed again in May 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and Ethiopia\u2019s\u00a0National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC),\u00a01,073,7642\u00a0people were displaced by conflict as of mid-April 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though some were displaced since 2012, the report notes that the vast majority of the displacements occurred after September 2017 in Oromia and Somali regions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: Radio Ergo<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SANAG (SOHA) &#8211; Displaced families from the Somali region of Ethiopia living on the outskirts of Badhan\u00a0town in northern Somalia\u2019s Sanag region are surviving under difficult conditions without access to food and proper shelter.
