GAROWE \u2013 <\/strong>The authorities of Puntland State have strengthened their warnings to residents of coastal areas overlooking the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean following the strong offshore earthquake that occurred off the state\u2019s eastern coast, urging caution and a temporary suspension of maritime activities, particularly fishing and boat transport, until monitoring and assessment operations are completed and sea conditions are confirmed to be stable, with no impacts posing a threat to residents or people working at sea.<\/p>\n

Puntland\u2019s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Abdinasser Yusuf Haji Green, said during a press conference that the earthquake occurred on the seabed off the Alula area, explaining that the relevant authorities are continuously monitoring developments to assess the tremor\u2019s potential effects on coastal areas. He stressed that the warning is part of a precautionary approach adopted by the authorities to protect residents and reduce risks, at a time when there has so far been no confirmed information of casualties or widespread material damage caused by the earthquake.<\/p>\n

The minister urged residents of coastal areas to follow official instructions and increase their level of vigilance, while issuing a specific warning to fishermen and people engaged in maritime activities not to go out to sea temporarily. He also called on owners of boats and maritime transport vessels to remove them from the water and secure them on the shore, noting that these measures will remain linked to the results of assessments and technical information determining whether it is safe to resume maritime activities, thereby ensuring that the protection of lives remains the priority and avoiding unforeseen risks.<\/p>\n

An earthquake measuring about 6.0 in magnitude struck off the eastern coast of Puntland, at an estimated distance of 145 kilometres north of the city of Alula in the Ras Asir region, and was felt by residents in nearby coastal areas, according to available local information. The relevant authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and maritime conditions in the area, while the preliminary reports available so far have not confirmed any injuries, deaths or material damage linked to the tremor.<\/p>\n

The warnings come in an area where many coastal communities depend on the sea as a major source of food and income, meaning that any temporary restrictions on fishing and maritime transport have direct implications for residents\u2019 lives and livelihoods. At the same time, precautionary measures provide authorities and communities with additional time to monitor developments and make decisions based on technical information, while continued clear and rapid communication of warnings to villages and coastal areas most exposed to any potential maritime changes remains important.<\/p>\n
