MOGADISHU \u2013<\/strong> The Federal Government of Somalia plans to recruit four thousand new teachers as part of a national programme aimed at completing the recruitment of ten thousand teachers, in a move designed to strengthen the teaching workforce, expand access to basic education and improve the quality of educational services provided to students across the country. The initiative comes as the government places increasing emphasis on education as one of the key foundations for building national capacities and supporting development and stability.<\/p>\n

The new plan follows consultations between the Federal Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education and the education ministries of the Federal Member States, with the aim of identifying educational needs and directing recruitment toward areas facing the greatest shortages of teachers. Rural communities and areas affected by conflict in recent years are expected to receive particular attention, as they continue to face difficulties in securing teaching staff and maintaining regular schooling, thereby bringing educational services closer to children in underserved areas.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government recruited six thousand teachers during 2023 and 2024, and the recruitment of an additional four thousand teachers would bring the total number under the programme to ten thousand. This represents a significant expansion of the teaching workforce and could strengthen schools\u2019 capacity to accommodate students and reduce the impact of teacher shortages. However, achieving long-term results will require recruitment to be supported by continuous training and professional development, curriculum improvement and the provision of appropriate learning environments.<\/p>\n

The distribution of teachers is as important as recruitment itself, given the wide differences in educational needs between cities, rural areas and communities affected by displacement and conflict. Education authorities seek to deploy the new teachers according to the actual priorities of each area, while taking into account security and geographical conditions as well as schools\u2019 capacity to accommodate teachers and students. This would help maximise the programme\u2019s impact and prevent excessive concentration of teaching staff in areas where educational services are already more developed.<\/p>\n

The plan faces several challenges, including the continuing disagreement between the Federal Government and the Puntland administration over participation in the national recruitment programme, as well as the need to secure sustainable funding for salaries, training and school development. The programme\u2019s success will depend on the ability of education institutions to coordinate the selection, deployment, monitoring and evaluation processes, and to translate the expansion of the teaching workforce into tangible improvements in education quality and the continuity of schooling, supporting the broader objective of building a more inclusive and sustainable national education system.<\/p>\n

Expanding the teaching workforce comes at a time when Somalia\u2019s education sector continues to face longstanding challenges, including limited school infrastructure, shortages of qualified teachers and disparities in access to education between different areas, in addition to the impact of displacement and conflict on children and local communities. Investment in teachers can extend beyond the classroom, representing a direct investment in human capital and in the ability of future generations to contribute to nation-building. Completing the programme\u2019s target of recruiting ten thousand teachers therefore presents an opportunity to strengthen the foundations of national education, provided it is accompanied by clear policies for training, equitable deployment, improved school environments and continuous monitoring, ensuring that its benefits reach the children most in need and strengthening education\u2019s role in development and stability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
