LAS ANOD \u2013 <\/strong>A high-level United Nations delegation arrived in Las Anod, the capital of North East State of Somalia, yesterday, Sunday, on a field visit focused on monitoring the humanitarian, development and health situation and strengthening cooperation with the state government and local authorities. The visit included a series of official meetings and field activities aimed at directly assessing residents\u2019 needs and the level of basic services, while discussing ways to improve the humanitarian response and align it with local development priorities.<\/p>\n

The delegation was led by George Conway, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, who followed up during the visit on issues related to UN coordination, humanitarian response and development efforts. The delegation began its programme by arriving at Las Anod Airport at around 9:00 a.m., before proceeding to a number of official and field engagements that continued until the afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Vice President of North East State, Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, received the delegation before the two sides held a meeting that discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the state government and the United Nations and examined the humanitarian and development needs facing residents. Abdirashid expressed his appreciation for the visit, stressing the importance of continued direct engagement with international partners and developing coordination mechanisms that can help direct programmes and assistance towards the actual priorities of local communities.<\/p>\n

The UN delegation reaffirmed continued cooperation with the North East State Government and support for efforts to address humanitarian needs and promote local development. The discussions focused on the importance of information sharing and coordination among state institutions, UN agencies, and international and local organisations, helping to improve needs assessments, prioritise interventions and increase the effectiveness of humanitarian and development programmes, particularly in areas facing growing pressure on services and livelihoods.<\/p>\n

On the health side of the visit, the delegation inspected Las Anod General Hospital to assess the medical services provided to residents and directly identify the main needs and challenges facing the health facility. The visit included a review of the hospital\u2019s situation and requirements, as part of an approach that links the assessment of basic services to field realities and strengthens partners\u2019 ability to identify areas requiring additional technical, humanitarian and health support.<\/p>\n

The delegation also participated in a partnership conference bringing together officials from the North East State Government, representatives of international and local organisations, and actors working in the humanitarian and development sectors. The discussions focused on strengthening coordination among the different parties, exchanging information and expertise, identifying shared priorities and improving response mechanisms, allowing for greater integration between short-term humanitarian programmes and development initiatives aimed at building resilience and improving local services.<\/p>\n

The programme also included a visit to Anjeed, where the delegation observed first-hand the situation of communities affected by drought and assessed key needs related to water, food, health, livelihoods and basic services. The visit provided the delegation with an opportunity to hear directly about residents\u2019 conditions and monitor the effects of climatic conditions on their lives, at a time when limited resources and declining resilience are creating additional challenges for affected households and communities hosting displaced people.<\/p>\n

The visit is particularly significant amid expanding humanitarian needs in Somalia this year, as the effects of drought, displacement, insecurity and declining livelihoods overlap with growing pressure on basic services. The humanitarian response also faces constraints linked to funding shortages, requiring the United Nations and its partners to strengthen coordination and direct available resources towards the most vulnerable people and areas, while simultaneously linking emergency assistance with longer-term programmes that strengthen communities\u2019 ability to withstand shocks.<\/p>\n

The delegation\u2019s programme in Las Anod lasted from around 9:00 a.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m., before it departed the city for Mogadishu. The nature of the visit, which combined official meetings, a health assessment, a partnership conference and a field visit to a drought-affected area, reflects an effort to make the UN presence more closely connected to local realities and residents\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n

The visit of the UN delegation to Las Anod comes within broader United Nations efforts to strengthen coordination between humanitarian action, development and resilience-building in Somalia, where the organisation launched the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan in January amid extensive needs and increasing funding constraints. High-level field visits can provide a clearer picture of local conditions, support dialogue with authorities and communities, and help align international programmes with actual priorities, supporting a gradual shift from emergency response towards more sustainable approaches in health, services, development and resilience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
