MOGADISHU \u2013 <\/strong>South West State leader, Mr. Adam Mohamed Nur \u201cAdam Madobe,\u201d on Saturday called for raising Somalia\u2019s national readiness to confront disasters and emergencies and developing response and coordination capacities among state institutions and relevant actors, during a working visit to the National Emergency Operations Center of the Somali Disaster Management Agency \u201cSoDMA\u201d in the capital Mogadishu. During the visit, Adam Madobe was briefed on the center\u2019s operations and the efforts being undertaken in disaster preparedness and response to risks, disasters, and crises, stressing the importance of strengthening national institutions\u2019 ability to deal with emergencies rapidly and systematically.<\/p>\n

Adam Madobe was received at the center by the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, along with a number of agency officials and staff. The two sides held a meeting that reviewed the agency\u2019s responsibilities and its role in reducing disaster risks, preparing for and managing them, responding to emergencies, and supporting affected communities while coordinating relief and assistance operations. Adam Madobe also received a briefing on the nature of work at the National Emergency Operations Center and the mechanisms used to monitor risks and emergency situations and respond to them.<\/p>\n

The meeting also discussed the importance of developing channels for cooperation and information sharing among the Federal Government, federal member states, national and local authorities, and partners working in disaster management and humanitarian response. Participants emphasized that improving the flow and timely sharing of information among institutions is essential to raising preparedness, identifying areas most exposed to risks, and directing interventions more rapidly and effectively, helping reduce losses and protect populations and livelihoods during emergencies.<\/p>\n

Adam Madobe praised the efforts of the Somali Disaster Management Agency and its role in strengthening national capacities to address disasters and humanitarian crises. He stressed the need to strengthen cooperation among government institutions, federal member states, local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and relevant bodies, considering the coordination of efforts and the exchange of expertise and information fundamental to building a more capable national response system. He also emphasized the importance of continuing to develop institutional mechanisms to ensure that assistance reaches affected people in a timely and organized manner.<\/p>\n

The South West State leader stressed the need to continue investing in early preparedness and developing institutional and technical capacities to deal with natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. He noted that preparedness is not limited to responding after a disaster occurs, but also includes prevention, risk reduction, early warning, advance planning, and building community resilience. These priorities are particularly important for South West State, where communities are repeatedly exposed to the effects of drought, floods, displacement, and deteriorating livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Adam Madobe was accompanied during the visit by several members of his cabinet and state officials, and the delegation was briefed on operations at the National Emergency Operations Center and the efforts of the Somali Disaster Management Agency in preparedness, response, and coordination. The participation of state officials reflects the South West State government\u2019s interest in strengthening institutional cooperation with national authorities responsible for disaster management and exchanging experience on risk and emergency management, contributing to a more integrated response capable of addressing humanitarian needs among populations in affected areas.<\/p>\n

The Somali Disaster Management Agency \u201cSoDMA\u201d plays a national role in disaster risk reduction, preparedness, emergency response, and the coordination of relief and assistance efforts for affected communities, at a time when Somalia faces recurring climate and humanitarian risks that affect populations and livelihoods. Strengthening national preparedness is becoming increasingly important amid the interaction of drought, floods, displacement, and humanitarian crises, making early warning, advance planning, information sharing, and institutional coordination critical factors in reducing the impact of disasters.
