MOGADISHU \u2013 <\/strong>Somalia is moving to expand the role of domestic investment in addressing climate change by strengthening partnerships with the private sector and directing greater resources toward climate adaptation, environmental protection, and renewable energy projects. The approach emerged during a meeting held in Mogadishu on Thursday, August 6, 2026, between Minister of Environment and Climate Change Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama and representatives from the banking, telecommunications, and energy sectors. The meeting examined ways to develop green financing and expand business participation in national climate and environmental programmes, supporting the development of a more resilient economy.<\/p>\n

The discussions highlighted the importance of developing investment partnerships in climate adaptation, clean energy, and ecosystem protection, while strengthening the role of financial institutions in providing appropriate financing mechanisms for green projects. The government considers greater private sector engagement essential to helping narrow the financing gap facing climate programmes, while also benefiting from the technical expertise and modern technologies available within companies and economic institutions.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change said expanding cooperation with the private sector represents an important opportunity to mobilize the financing, expertise, and technology required to advance Somalia\u2019s climate and environmental priorities, noting that investment in climate action can also serve as a driver of economic growth and job creation. Priority areas include renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable natural resource management, which can strengthen communities\u2019 ability to withstand climate shocks while opening new pathways for domestic investment.<\/p>\n

The initiative comes as Somalia continues to face recurring climate challenges, including droughts, floods, and environmental degradation, which directly affect agriculture, livestock, food and water security, and community livelihoods, particularly among vulnerable groups. Although Somalia\u2019s contribution to global emissions remains extremely limited, it is among the countries most exposed to the impacts of climate change, making greater investment in prevention, adaptation, and resilience a national necessity alongside continued cooperation with international partners.<\/p>\n

The move to involve the private sector more deeply in climate action reflects growing recognition that addressing climate change in Somalia requires resources beyond traditional financing, as well as a model that combines investment, innovation, environmental protection, and economic development.
