MOGADISHU \u2013 <\/strong>The Southwest State of Somalia has intensified consultations with United Nations agencies in Mogadishu as part of an effort to accelerate the implementation of development and humanitarian projects and expand programmes responding to the basic needs of local communities. The initiative reflects a growing focus by the Southwest State Government on strengthening international partnerships and directing them more effectively toward local development, improved public services, and stronger institutional capacity to manage and monitor projects in line with national priorities and the broader sustainable development agenda.<\/p>\n

As part of this effort, several ministers from the Southwest State Government, during a working visit to Mogadishu, held meetings with senior officials from the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The discussions focused on ways to accelerate priority programmes and projects and overcome challenges that could affect their implementation. The meetings also addressed mechanisms for strengthening joint coordination, identifying the most urgent needs, and exploring opportunities for new programmes responding to challenges facing local communities, with emphasis on the role of government institutions as key partners in planning, implementation, and monitoring.<\/p>\n

The discussions covered health, water, sanitation, food security, and agriculture, sectors directly linked to the living conditions of communities and their ability to withstand crises. In the health sector, attention was given to strengthening primary healthcare services, maternal and child health programmes, and nutrition interventions, while discussions on water and sanitation focused on expanding access to safe water sources and improving related services, particularly in rural areas and communities most affected by crises. The two sides also discussed support for agricultural production, improved production methods, and stronger capacity among farmers and pastoral communities to cope with drought and the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n

The ministerial delegation stressed that the Southwest State Government seeks to transform cooperation with UN agencies from a framework focused primarily on immediate humanitarian needs into a long-term development partnership supporting institution-building and local capacity. In this regard, the ministers emphasized the importance of transferring expertise, developing national skills, and improving planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation mechanisms, while strengthening transparency and efficiency in the management of programmes and projects. They also stressed the importance of directing available resources toward priorities identified through the needs of local communities to ensure tangible results and greater sustainability of development interventions.<\/p>\n

Officials from UNICEF and FAO, for their part, reaffirmed their continued cooperation with the Southwest State Government and their support for programmes targeting sectors most closely connected to the lives of local communities, with a focus on improving basic services, strengthening food security, and building resilience. The partnership is particularly important amid the interconnected challenges facing the state, including humanitarian needs, displacement, poverty, climate-related pressures, and limited access to some services in rural areas. Both sides emphasized that addressing these challenges requires sustained coordination between government institutions and international partners, as well as linking immediate interventions with development projects capable of delivering lasting impact.<\/p>\n

The latest engagements come within a broader effort to strengthen the integration of humanitarian action, development, and resilience-building, ensuring that programmes not only mitigate the effects of crises but also help communities rely increasingly on their own resources and local capacities. In this process, investment in health, water, agriculture, food security, and community empowerment remains essential, alongside support for local institutions capable of leading development efforts. Accelerating priority projects and strengthening coordination with partners could support the Southwest State Government\u2019s efforts to improve services, expand rural development opportunities, and promote greater economic and social stability across the state.<\/p>\n

UNICEF and FAO are among Somalia\u2019s key international partners, implementing programmes in health, nutrition, water, child protection, food security, agricultural development, and resilience to climate-related crises. Southwest Somalia has seen expanding cooperation with UN agencies in recent years as part of efforts to improve services, support reconstruction, and advance rural development, at a time when humanitarian, climate, and economic challenges require stronger coordination between government institutions and international partners.
