{"id":1976,"date":"2018-09-18T07:23:10","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T07:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=1976"},"modified":"2018-09-19T07:25:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T07:25:39","slug":"save-the-children-concerned-fgm-deaths-in-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/09\/18\/save-the-children-concerned-fgm-deaths-in-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"Save the children concerned FGM deaths in Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> Save the Children calls upon the government of Somalia, civil society and other community actors to take immediate action to scale up efforts to protect children, particularly girls, against all forms of violence and harmful traditional practices, including Female Genital Mutilation\/Cutting (FGM\/C).\u00a0<span id=\"more-12374\"><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The call comes after\u00a0a\u00a0series of confirmed reports of deaths of young\u00a0 girls who have undergone FGM\/C while others are still fighting for their lives in hospitals. On Thursday, two sisters Aasiyo (10) and Khadijo (11) died two days\u00a0after they were cut in a remote village of Dorodo, at the\u00a0border\u00a0between Ethiopia\u00a0and\u00a0Puntland State of Somalia. \u00a0The girls died as they were taken to the hospital.\u00a0Two months ago, 10-years-old Deqa Nour died of simliar complications after going through an FGM procedure in her village.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over seven other girls, between the ages of eight and five who were rescued by Save the Children staff after they were cut are currently being treated in different hospitals in Goldogob and Beletweyne. All the girls were bleeding excessively when they were brought to the hospital.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite all the efforts by the government and civil society actors to raise awareness on the risks and effects of\u00a0 FGM\/C on the lives of girls,\u00a0 the practice continues\u00a0unabated, putting the lives of millions of Somali girls at risk and robbing them\u00a0of\u00a0their right to a healthy and dignified childhood.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m afraid that this is just\u00a0the\u00a0tip of the iceberg as many more cases go unreported,\u201d said Timothy Bishop, Country Director of Save the Children in Somalia. \u201cThis can only be stopped if families and their communities say enough is enough \u2013\u00a0 we should no longer continue to torture and risk the lives of our children.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bishop said that apart from the community efforts, stopping FGM\/C requires stronger laws that will protect girls and allow the\u00a0perpetrators\u00a0of this harmful practice to be punished.\u00a0 Both the FGM policy and Sexual Offenses bill that\u00a0promise\u00a0stronger legal protection of Somali girls against FGM and other gender based violence are yet to be approved by the Federal Government.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although FGM\/C has been declining in Somalia from the mostly quoted figure of 98% to current 90%, more needs to be done to eliminate this practice. FGM\/C violates the rights to health, security and physical integrity of the girls as well as the right to be free from inhuman or degrading treatment, torture and cruelty, and the right to life when the procedure results in death.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6615568673270037956xmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Save the Children reaffirms its commitment to continue to support the government, civil society and communities at large to eradicate FGM\/C practices.
