MOGADISHU —<\/strong> \u200bAs part of its strategic efforts to strengthen international partnerships and support the role of women in sustainable development, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, received in Mogadishu on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, a high-level delegation from UN Women led by Ms. Anna Mutavati, Regional Director for East and Southern Africa. The meeting focused on joint cooperation in empowering women and girls.<\/p>\n

The meeting\u2014as detailed by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA)\u2014reviewed ways to enhance cooperation between the government and the UN entity, particularly regarding women\u2019s leadership, enhancing female participation in politics, and expanding programs aimed at protecting the rights of Somali women and girls while supporting their economic and social independence.<\/p>\n

During the talks, the Deputy Prime Minister commended the continued support provided by UN Women, emphasizing the strategic importance of intensifying efforts to empower women to play a pivotal role in state-building, governance, and peacebuilding processes.<\/p>\n

For her part, Ms. Anna Mutavati expressed her appreciation for the tangible steps taken by the Somali government in advancing women\u2019s issues, reaffirming the organization\u2019s commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership and providing necessary technical and logistical support to ensure the sustainability of development programs for women across various regions.<\/p>\n

Official National Agency sources clarified that discussions focused on the importance of integrating gender into national transformation plans to ensure equal opportunities and women\u2019s access to decision-making positions, in line with the nation\u2019s vision of building a just and inclusive society.<\/p>\n

The meeting was also attended by the Women\u2019s Affairs Coordinator at the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms. Aminakeyf Ahmed, where current local initiatives and future needs to enhance the capacities of female cadres in government institutions and civil society organizations were reviewed.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, officials stressed that women\u2019s empowerment is not merely a social goal but an economic and security necessity that contributes to enhancing community resilience against current challenges, emphasizing the importance of aligning international and national efforts to achieve set goals within a defined timeframe.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded with the necessity of establishing permanent coordination mechanisms to follow up on the implementation of joint projects, asserting that the partnership between Somalia and the UN represents the cornerstone of driving structural reforms that ensure the protection and preservation of the dignity and rights of Somali women in all fields.<\/p>\n

Somalia\u2019s direction toward strengthening partnerships with international institutions for women\u2019s empowerment represents an “investment in the future”; for nation-building is incomplete without the active participation of its other half.
