MOGADISHU —<\/strong> M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) has warned of an unprecedented and sharp deterioration in the health and nutritional conditions in the Federal Republic of Somalia, driven by consecutive failed rainy seasons and soaring water prices, alongside a record decline in international humanitarian funding.<\/p>\n

\u200bIn a field report, MSF stated that its teams in Baidoa and Mudug are witnessing an alarming increase in severe acute malnutrition and outbreaks of preventable diseases such as measles and diphtheria. This follows the Somali government’s declaration of a drought emergency, placing the country in a complex health crisis.<\/p>\n

MSF noted that international reports confirm 4.4 million people face acute food insecurity, including 1.85 million children under five at risk of death due to hunger, while over 3.3 million people have been forced to flee to overcrowded camps lacking basic services.<\/p>\n

MSF revealed that international support has dropped to its lowest level in a decade, resulting in the closure of over 200 health and nutrition facilities since early 2025 and a reduction in food aid from 1.1 million beneficiaries to just 350,000 per month.<\/p>\n

MSF reported that its centers in Baidoa saw a 48% surge in malnutrition admissions, while the Mudug region experienced a 35% increase. With 182 health facilities partially or fully non-functional in the region, an immense strain has been placed on the organization’s operational capacity.<\/p>\n

Allara Ali, MSF Project Coordinator, emphasized that hospitals are receiving children in critical condition after arduous journeys. She stressed that the drought has not only dried up wells but also destroyed family support systems, making the race to save lives a challenge beyond the capacity of medical teams.<\/p>\n

MSF highlighted the economic hardships of displaced people, as water prices soared to $4 per barrel. In response, the organization distributed over 6 million liters of safe drinking water across 17 IDP sites as an emergency measure to combat acute water scarcity.<\/p>\n

MSF shared heart-wrenching testimonies from mothers who lost their livestock and were unable to afford food or medicine. Contaminated and salty water has led to acute intestinal diseases among children, exacerbated by unemployment and worsening hunger in displacement camps.<\/p>\n

\u200bElshafie Mohamed, MSF Country Representative in Somalia, concluded by warning that this situation is “unacceptable” as it was predictable. He urged donors to immediately disburse emergency funds for nutrition and vaccination programs before the “Jilaal” dry season worsens, to prevent a massive loss of life.<\/p>\n

This crisis reflects a dual humanitarian tragedy where “climate extremes” meet “international neglect.” Somalia, situated at the “ground zero” of climate change, finds itself paying the price of global environmental shifts with the lives of its children. Five consecutive failed rainy seasons are not merely a weather phenomenon but a total disruption of livelihoods.
