\u200bMOGADISHU —<\/strong> The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) held a high-level humanitarian meeting in Mogadishu to address the country\u2019s worsening drought and food insecurity crisis.<\/p>\n

According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the Chairman of the agency Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle emphasized during the opening session the necessity of making swift, data-driven decisions to save lives. He stated that protecting vulnerable communities requires immediate action based on evidence rather than broad strategic planning.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together government institutions and international agencies to synchronize efforts directed at preventing the humanitarian situation from deteriorating further.<\/p>\n

Discussions focused on identifying high-risk areas facing Emergency conditions (IPC Phase 4) and developing a costed emergency response plan with clearly defined roles.<\/p>\n

\u200bThis urgent intervention follows one of the driest October\u2013December rainy seasons on record, driven by La Ni\u00f1a conditions. This climatic shock has left an estimated 4.61 million people across the nation suffering from the impacts of prolonged drought.<\/p>\n

Officials highlighted a critical funding shortfall, noting that the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan was only 26 percent funded by the end of December. This deficit has forced agencies to scale back essential assistance despite the rapidly growing needs of affected populations.<\/p>\n

Somalia is currently grappling with one of the most complex climate crises in its history, characterized by recurrent failed rainy seasons and depleted water resources. This has devastated livestock\u2014the country’s primary economic lifeline\u2014triggering mass displacement toward urban centers.<\/p>\n

The meeting, captured in images showing active participation from technical experts and UN representatives, reflects the Federal Government\u2019s commitment to leading humanitarian action. It aims to unify international support to build a sustainable response against repeated environmental shocks.<\/p>\n
