MOGADISHU — <\/strong>A two-day consultative meeting on Somalia\u2019s human rights transition, jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development and the United Nations Transition Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), concluded today in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

The meeting focused on finalizing the roadmap for transferring the Human Rights and Protection Group (HRPG) portfolio from UNTMIS to the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT)\u2014a key step in the broader transition process ahead of UNTMIS\u2019s expected drawdown.<\/p>\n

The consultation brought together 25 senior government officials and 23 representatives from various UN agencies, who engaged in in-depth discussions on how to sustain and strengthen human rights efforts in Somalia in alignment with national priorities and long-term strategies.<\/p>\n

In his closing remarks, Mohamed Bashir Omar, Director General of the Ministry, reaffirmed the Somali government\u2019s strong commitment to upholding and advancing human rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomalia is ready to fully lead the human rights agenda\u2014anchored in our values, our international commitments, and the aspirations of our people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He described the handover as a milestone in Somalia\u2019s path to national ownership and self-reliance, while also highlighting the importance of ongoing collaboration with international partners.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe must continue to invest in capacity-building, resource mobilization, and institutional development to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Also addressing the meeting were Ambassador Yusuf Garaad Omar and Raisedon Zenenga, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, both of whom expressed strong support for Somalia\u2019s leadership in the human rights space and praised the country\u2019s commitment to building a resilient, rights-based governance framework.<\/p>\n

The event marks a significant moment in Somalia\u2019s transition towards greater sovereignty and leadership in protecting and promoting human rights across the nation.<\/p>\n
