MOGADISHU — <\/strong>The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed serious concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Somalia, citing severe funding shortfalls, persistent climate challenges, and renewed displacement driven by ongoing violence.<\/p>\n

In its June 2025 Humanitarian Update, OCHA reported that significant cuts in donor funding have severely constrained humanitarian operations across the country. These reductions have critically limited the ability of aid agencies to meet the growing needs of vulnerable communities, particularly in areas such as food assistance, healthcare, nutrition, and protection services.<\/p>\n

While recent rainfall has brought some relief to southern regions, northern Somalia remains predominantly dry, with prolonged drought conditions persisting. The erratic rainfall patterns have further exposed pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities\u2014already burdened by years of recurring climate shocks\u2014to heightened vulnerability.<\/p>\n

The report also draws attention to new waves of displacement in Lower Shabelle\u2019s Afgoye district, where violent clashes in June alone forced more than 8,000 people to flee their homes. Most of the newly displaced are now residing in overcrowded settlements with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and basic services.<\/p>\n

OCHA renewed its urgent appeal for increased funding and stronger international donor support to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. As of the end of June, only a small portion of Somalia\u2019s 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan has been funded\u2014placing millions at risk of losing access to lifesaving assistance.<\/p>\n

Humanitarian agencies warn that unless immediate support is mobilized, recent progress in food security, public health, and displacement response may be undone, especially as Somalia continues to face both conflict-driven and climate-related emergencies.<\/p>\n
