{"id":170,"date":"2018-04-24T11:05:13","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T11:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=170"},"modified":"2018-04-28T10:41:58","modified_gmt":"2018-04-28T10:41:58","slug":"five-killed-in-somalia-flooding-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/04\/24\/five-killed-in-somalia-flooding-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Killed in Somalia Flooding Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"22\"><strong>MOGADISHU(SOHA) \u2014<\/strong> At least five people, including two children, have died following severe flooding that has displaced thousands of people in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">The presence of Al-Shabaab groub has hindered delivery of aid to affected communities across the conflict-prone East African country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"25\">The children have been confirmed dead in Cadaado city in the central Galgudud region as rains worsen conditions in overcrowded Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) settlements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"24\">An estimated 9 300 displaced people in the settlements have been affected and an unknown number has moved to nearby towns until flooding recedes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"22\">In Jubaland, three people have died as a result of flash floods in Ceel Waaq and Ceel Cadde in the southern Jubaland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"8\">An estimated 28,200 people have been displaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"8\"><strong>Up to 350 000 people are at risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) bemoaned the presence of terror groups in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">&#8220;Due to the presence of Al-Shabaab, humanitarian partners have little access to such areas in Middle Juba region,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"18\">Ironically, the Al-Shabaab has displaced the citizens from their homes through a reign of terror over two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"19\">In contrast to 2017 when the country suffered drought, heavy rains have pummeled Somalia since the beginning of March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"16\">Subsequent flooding has increased the risk of diseases such as malaria, acute watery diarrhea and cholera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-para-word-count=\"16\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source:\u00a0AllAfrica<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOGADISHU(SOHA) \u2014 At least five people, including two children, have died following severe flooding that has displaced thousands of people in Somalia.
