MOGADISHU — <\/strong>Torrential rains that lashed the Somali capital of Mogadishu overnight have left more than 10 people dead, caused significant destruction, and disrupted movement across key parts of the city, locals said Saturday.<\/p>\n

The worst-hit area was the Ceelqalow neighborhood in Wadajir district, along with several other low-lying districts, where flash floods collapsed homes and swept away personal belongings. Among the victims were members of the same family, including an elderly woman and her granddaughter, who were killed when their dilapidated house crumbled under the pressure of floodwaters.<\/p>\n

The downpour also devastated displacement camps, where many residents live in makeshift shelters made of sticks and plastic sheets. Floodwaters destroyed what little food and supplies the families had, compounding already dire humanitarian conditions.<\/p>\n

Residents and local leaders have voiced frustration over what they say is a lack of preparedness by authorities. The Banadir regional administration is facing mounting criticism, with many calling for sustainable flood management and urban planning to prevent recurring disasters of this nature.<\/p>\n

The rains have also rendered several major roads impassable, paralyzing transport and cutting off access to key parts of the capital.<\/p>\n

Mogadishu residents warn that without proper drainage infrastructure and disaster response plans, the risk of future flood-related tragedies remains dangerously high.<\/p>\n

Aid agencies and local officials are being urged to step in quickly to assist those affected and to implement long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of seasonal rains and urban flooding.<\/p>\n
