NAIROBI —<\/strong> The number of food-insecure people in East and Central Africa increased to 73 million in April, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional bloc, said in a report released on Monday.<\/p>\n

The report suggested that the amount increased from 69.2 million in February, driven by protracted conflict and insecurity.<\/p>\n

“These are the key drivers of food insecurity, as they are obstructing humanitarian efforts, disrupting supply chains, hindering agricultural production and market access, and displacing communities, leading to food shortages,” IGAD and FAO said.<\/p>\n

The worst-affected countries are Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, the Central African Republic (CAR), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda, and Tanzania are also impacted.<\/p>\n

The institutions do not foresee an improvement in the food security situation in the region due to anticipated escalating conflicts in the eastern DR Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the CAR.<\/p>\n

These crises will heighten food and nutrition insecurity due to “mass displacement, economic collapse, and limited humanitarian access, increasing regional instability and need,” according to the report.<\/p>\n

The institutions observed that with no signs of improvement, the fast-changing funding landscape, where donors are reducing funds, would further hinder effective aid delivery for those in need.<\/p>\n
