DAR ES SALAAM\u00a0 —<\/strong> The East African Community (EAC) has urged member states to establish a joint mechanism for genocide prevention and pursue appropriate actions against perpetrators by the regional bloc’s protocol on peace and security.<\/p>\n

EAC Secretary General Veronica Nduva said in a statement on Monday that the EAC has established an early warning center at its headquarters in Tanzania’s northern city of Arusha, and national centers in several member states, with plans to extend coverage to all.<\/p>\n

“These centers support the anticipation and management of conflicts through systematic data collection and analysis,” said Nduva.<\/p>\n

As the region commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, it was vital to recognize that the warning signs that preceded the genocide, including hate speech, incitement, ethnic profiling, disinformation, and dehumanization, still existed in parts of the region today, she said.<\/p>\n

“In the digital age, these threats are amplified by social media and other mass communication tools, compounded by challenges such as youth unemployment, governance gaps, and the proliferation of small arms,” added Nduva.<\/p>\n

She said this occasion marked a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and expressed solidarity with the survivors who have borne the burden of this tragedy for three decades.<\/p>\n

The EAC is a regional intergovernmental organization of eight member states, namely Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, with a mission to promote economic, political, and social integration in East Africa.<\/p>\n
