MOGADISHU —<\/strong> The United Nations (UN) on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia in the fight against explosive hazards, aiming for a safe and secure future for all citizens.<\/p>\n

James Swan, UN secretary-general’s special representative for Somalia, said improvised explosive devices (IEDs) continue to pose a significant threat to peace and security across Somalia, with 597 devices causing over 1,400 casualties in 2024.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, Swan said landmines and improvised explosive devices have disproportionately affected civilian populations.<\/p>\n

This event urges global action to reduce the stigma faced by survivors of explosive ordnance incidents, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive response to address the impact of such events.<\/p>\n

Swan said the UN has long supported and continues to support Somali security institutions in mitigating the risks associated with IEDs and explosive remnants of war.<\/p>\n

He said that progress has been made in building national capacities through training and the provision of specialized equipment. In February, the UN Mine Action Service handed over an assortment of life-saving equipment to counter IED threats.<\/p>\n

In 2005, the UN General Assembly declared April 4 as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, to raise awareness of the need for continued efforts to foster the establishment and development of national mine action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war pose a serious threat to civilian populations or hinder social and economic development.<\/p>\n
