{"id":1630,"date":"2018-07-18T07:32:53","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T07:32:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=1630"},"modified":"2018-07-19T07:09:33","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T07:09:33","slug":"iom-over-1400-died-in-mediterranean-sea-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/07\/18\/iom-over-1400-died-in-mediterranean-sea-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"IOM : Over 1,400 died in mediterranean sea this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ROME (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong> Among the 50,872 migrants that crossed the Mediterranean Sea until July 15, 2018, 1,443 had lost their lives while trying to cross into Europe, the UN refugee agency said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement, International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the arrivals are mainly from Tunisia, Eritrea, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Pakistan, Iraq, and Algeria.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-ad\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>The number of migrants has shown an 80 percent decrease when compared with the same period last year.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMigrants arriving at the port told IOM staff that four traveling companions died last Friday. Witnesses said all were on board, although without water or food when they spotted another vessel, still not identified. Driven by despair, about 30 people jumped into the water trying to reach the ship, which was much too far away,\u201d Flavio Di Giacomo, IOM representative in Italy, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFour drowned, all of the Somali origin, including one 17-year-old boy.
