BOSASO —<\/strong> Puntland regional administration has rejected food aid dispatched by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) for drought and conflict-affected communities in Puntland, citing concerns over the aid’s legitimacy and distribution process.<\/p>\n

At a press conference in Bosaso on Sunday, Puntland’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, alongside the Minister of Information, accused the Somali Federal Government of diverting aid meant for Puntland to private individuals, including elected officials from Puntland.<\/p>\n

The ministers criticized the Federal Government for mislabeling previously stored food supplies as a new aid for Puntland.<\/p>\n

“Food transported from warehouses in Suuq Bacad market to Puntland and sent through unofficial channels highlights the corruption rampant in the Federal Government of Somalia. The federal government did not contact Puntland Ministries,” said Puntland’s Information Minister.<\/p>\n

The Puntland administration warned that it would take legal action against anyone caught secretly delivering food supplies from the Federal Government into Puntland territories. They also pledged to notify international donors about the alleged mismanagement, urging them to reconsider their trust in the Somali Federal Government.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) delivered 700 tons of food aid to Somalia to support families affected by severe drought in the Horn of Africa. The aid was handed over to SoDMA in a ceremony attended by UAE Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed Juma Al-Rumaithi and SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle.<\/p>\n

According to SoDMA, the aid was distributed across multiple drought-affected regions, with 300 tons allocated to Kismayo in Jubaland State and 200 tons to Garowe in Puntland.<\/p>\n

The batch of food aid sent to Puntland on Saturday was the second delivery.<\/p>\n
