MOGADISHU —<\/strong> Somalia and United Nations agencies are ramping up flood mitigation response to the Gu (April to June) rains and have so far reached about 72,000 people with some form of assistance.<\/p>\n

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Friday that at least 770,000 people could be affected by the end of the Gu season, which is marked by enhanced downpours.<\/p>\n

“Additional funds are required to urgently meet the needs of the affected people,” the OCHA said in its latest flash update released in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.<\/p>\n

At least 203,438 people have been affected, including around 37,120 displaced or relocated and nine people killed as of Wednesday, according to Somalia’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.<\/p>\n

The OCHA said the rains have led to muddy road conditions, restricting the movement of people and goods, including humanitarian supplies, in some areas of the East African country.<\/p>\n

The floods are the latest in a series of extreme weather events in recent years to hit Somalia, where communities find themselves at the sharp end of the global climate crisis, according to humanitarian agencies.<\/p>\n
