MOGADISHU — <\/strong><\/span>One person was killed while another sustained serious injuries following a cargo aircraft accident at Elberde town in Somalia.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to reports, the aircraft model Skyward Fokker 50 Tail (5Y- JWG), which had been contracted by the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP), allegedly overrun the 1000-metre runway and crashed into a building in the town centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aircraft\u00a0operated by Jetways\u00a0weighed 7 tonnes at the time of the crash.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only four people were reportedly onboard and two of them have since been confirmed safe.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has since confirmed the crash saying a probe is underway to establish the cause of the accident.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) wishes to confirm that an aircraft type Fokker 50 (F50) Cargo operated by Jetways, crash-landed on the runway at Ceel Bar& Airport today 18 January 2024 at 11:30 am local time,” read a statement from the authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The aircraft had a total of 4 crew on board, there is one death, one serious injury from the accident.”<\/span><\/p>\n
