{"id":1306,"date":"2018-06-24T22:48:41","date_gmt":"2018-06-24T22:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=1306"},"modified":"2018-06-25T10:22:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T10:22:38","slug":"amisom-shines-the-spotlight-on-sexual-and-gbv-in-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2018\/06\/24\/amisom-shines-the-spotlight-on-sexual-and-gbv-in-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"AMISOM shines the spotlight on Sexual and GBV in Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU (SOHA) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is taking concrete steps to tackle Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Somalia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"page-content clearfix\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"region region-content\">\n<div id=\"node-2667179\" class=\"node node-report node-full node-page\">\n<div class=\"node-content clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field body\">\n<p>The Mission\u2019s gender unit plans to train additional Somali police officers to help fight increased cases of sexual violence against women.<\/p>\n<p>The Reforms, Restructuring and Development Coordinator with AMISOM Mr. Maxwell Chikunguru, said the Mission is also encouraging gender mainstreaming in all government structures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStand up tall as AMISOM ambassadors in seeing that gender is effectively and efficiently mainstreamed in all government structures and systems in Somalia,\u201d said Chikunguru, who addressed a group of gender officers at the close of a three-day workshop on sexual and gender based violence, held in Mogadishu, to review the SGBV response framework.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop discussed the Sexual Offences Bill, and AMISOM\u2019s role in eliminating SGBV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the conflict countries, sexual violence is used as a weapon of war. They (criminals) take advantage of women,\u201d said Inspector Rachel Malambo, AMISOM Police Gender Coordinator, who noted<\/p>\n<p>that defilement cases were still rampant in Somalia, because the country was recovering from conflict.<\/p>\n<p>A participant Ahmadou Kanneh, a police officer from Sierra Leone who is based in Baidoa, the administrative capital of South West State, explained how they encourage their Somali counterparts to refer SGBV cases to the legal courts, instead of using the traditional justice system, which passes lenient sentences on sexual offenders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually advise SPF that there are certain cases which are very serious like SGBV; those are cases of human rights violations.
