MOGADISHU —<\/strong> The United Nations office in Somalia strongly condemned last night\u2019s mortar attack, in which a member of the UN\u2019s security staff was killed.<\/p>\n

In a press release issued by the office, several mortars fell last night in the area of Aden Adde airport in Mogadishu, where the United Nations office building is located, the attack also caused damage to United Nations infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UN Guard Unit plays an integral role in ensuring the safety and security of UN staff working in support of Somali peace- and state-building. We condemn this act of violence, and our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the victim during this difficult time,\u201d said the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing.<\/p>\n

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The UN office in Somalia has called for accountability for those responsible for the attack. The UN Office in Somalia reiterated its commitment to support efforts for peace and stability in Somalia.<\/p>\n
