{"id":12862,"date":"2023-11-24T06:50:36","date_gmt":"2023-11-24T06:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=12862"},"modified":"2025-01-23T10:41:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T10:41:46","slug":"death-toll-from-floods-in-somalia-rises-to-96","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2023\/11\/24\/death-toll-from-floods-in-somalia-rises-to-96\/","title":{"rendered":"Death toll from floods in Somalia rises to 96"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0<\/strong>The death toll from heavy rains and floods in Somalia has risen to 96, the head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency(SoDMA) said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Briefing Cabinet ministers in the capital Mogadishu, SoDMA Chief Mohamoud Moalim Abdulle said 2 million people have also been affected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following the meeting, the government called on the Somali community and aid agencies to scale up their support in helping people affected by the El Nino-induced floods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The South-central state of Hirshabelle and Southwest and Jubaland states are the most affected areas of the country, said Abdulle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of Jubaland, 954,255 people have been affected in the state alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThese figures are worrying and are expected to rise as the rains continue and river levels rise,\u201d Ahmed Hassan Omar, Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy for Jubaland state, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said urgent support is needed in the areas heavily affected as all roads and most airstrips in the state are cut off due to the floods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUrgent intervention is needed in the affected districts.
