MOGADISHU —<\/strong> The British Embassy in Mogadishu announced a commitment of more than $1 million on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, to a BBC Media Action project designed to amplify Somali women’s voices. The initiative aims to tackle the critical issues of climate change, conflict resolution, and gender equality through media.<\/p>\n

Funded by the UK’s Conflict Security and Stability Fund (CSSF), the initiative will partner with local media in Somali states and Somaliland to enhance female journalists’ capacity to engage communities on significant matters, particularly those affecting women.<\/p>\n

British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, highlighted the vital role of a free media in democracy and the importance of women\u2019s perspectives in fostering a more stable and prosperous Somalia. He relayed the country’s aspiration for peace, referencing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s vision for a nation “at peace with itself and the world.”<\/p>\n

Simon Bishop, CEO of BBC Media Action, pointed out the importance of access to impartial information as a pillar of democracy. He noted that this funding would strengthen local media facing economic difficulties, while centering women\u2019s voices in societal discussions and decision-making.<\/p>\n

The UK’s support for this project underscores its ongoing commitment to media freedom and the enhancement of gender equality in media representation, particularly in regions where such principles face challenges. The effort is expected to promote informed citizenship, leading to more open societies and resilient communities.<\/p>\n
