{"id":12141,"date":"2023-05-19T20:47:02","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T20:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=12141"},"modified":"2023-05-21T09:54:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-21T09:54:02","slug":"un-one-billion-threatened-by-cholera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2023\/05\/19\/un-one-billion-threatened-by-cholera\/","title":{"rendered":"UN: One billion threatened by cholera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENEVA &#8212;<\/strong><\/span> One billion people in 43 countries are at risk of cholera \u2014 a \u201cpandemic killing the poor\u201d \u2014 despite prevention and treatment being relatively straightforward, the United Nations warned on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UN branded the outlook bleak, saying it did not have the resources to fight the outbreaks, and the longer it took to start waging the battle, the worse the situation would get.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between the World Health Organization and the children\u2019s agency UNICEF, the UN is seeking $640 million to fight the infectious disease, warning of a \u201ccholera catastrophe\u201d if action is not ramped up immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWHO estimates that a billion people across 43 countries are at risk of cholera,\u201d said Henry Gray, the UN health agency\u2019s incident manager for the global cholera response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So far this year, 24 countries have reported cholera outbreaks, compared to 15 by mid-May last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Countries that are not usually affected by cholera are being affected and case fatality rates are far exceeding the typical one in 100.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gray blamed the rise in cases on poverty, conflict and climate change, as well as the population displacements they trigger, which take people away from safer sources of food and water, and from medical support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith the increase in the number of countries affected by cholera, the resources that were available for prevention and response are more thinly spread,\u201d he told a media briefing.<br \/>\nCholera is contracted from a bacterium that is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It causes diarrhea and vomiting, and can be especially dangerous for young children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jerome Pfaffmann Zambruni, the head of UNICEF\u2019s public health emergency unit, said the rise in cases was \u201ca wake-up call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere is a pandemic killing the poor right in front of us and we know exactly how to stop it, but we need more support and less inertia from the global community because if we don\u2019t act now, it\u2019s going to get worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe know how to treat it. We know how to control it. It\u2019s not easy but it\u2019s simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although cholera can kill within hours, it can be treated with simple oral rehydration, and antibiotics for more severe cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But many people lack timely access to such treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Outbreaks can be prevented by ensuring access to clean water and improving surveillance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the lack of funds for rapid response will cost lives that could have been saved, said Gray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe overall solution is long-term investment in wastewater infrastructure,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The campaign is not helped by the dearth of vaccines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Around 36 million cholera vaccine doses were produced last year, but it is not seen as an attractive product for manufacturers, as there is effectively no market in wealthy countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over 18 million oral cholera vaccine doses have been requested this year, but only eight million have been made available, bringing prevention campaigns to a halt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rather than the full two doses, only one is being issued to recipients \u201cto try to spin it out,\u201d said Gray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The number of available doses could double by 2025 and then double again by 2027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe won\u2019t have enough, even with those numbers, if the current trend for cholera cases continues,\u201d said Gray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cholera cases steadily declined over 10 years but the trend reversed in 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most heavily affected countries so far this year are Malawi and Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nine other countries are deemed to be in \u201cacute crisis\u201c: Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Syria, Zambia and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: ARAB NEWS\u00a0 Origin: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2306596\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored ugc noreferrer\">View original<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GENEVA &#8212; One billion people in 43 countries are at risk of cholera \u2014 a \u201cpandemic killing the poor\u201d \u2014 despite prevention and treatment being relatively straightforward, the United Nations warned on Friday.
