{"id":11977,"date":"2023-04-13T11:47:35","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T11:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=11977"},"modified":"2023-04-18T11:50:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T11:50:56","slug":"un-chief-reaffirms-support-to-somalias-path-to-peace-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2023\/04\/13\/un-chief-reaffirms-support-to-somalias-path-to-peace-stability\/","title":{"rendered":"UN chief reaffirms support to Somalia\u2019s path to peace, stability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0 <\/strong>Wrapping up his two-day visit to Somalia, the UN chief on Wednesday reaffirmed his commitment to support Somalia\u2019s path to peace and stability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLet us come together to advance peace and security, sustainable development and human rights, and build a better future for all Somalis,\u201d UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said Somalia faces many challenges, and the United Nations stands in solidarity with the Somali people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn these challenging times, I commend the energy and resilience of its people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guterres mentioned the climate change hazards in Somalia and said the Horn of Africa nation is only contributing 0.03% to greenhouse gas emissions, but \u201cas I just witnessed, Somalis are among the greatest victims of the chaos caused by the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guterres\u2019 visit to Somalia comes at a time when the country is witnessing one of the worst droughts in recorded history and terrorist attacks from the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group al-Shabaab which has been fighting the Somali government and the African Union (AU) peacekeepers since 2007.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mohamed Jabuti, an independent analyst based in the capital Mogadishu, said the UN chief\u2019s visit to Somalia is \u201csignificant and timely because the world cannot afford to see Somalia hit by another deadly famine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2011, Somalia was hit by a famine that killed 260,000 people, more than half of them children under six, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, nearly half of\u202fSomalia\u2019s population \u2013\u202f8.25 million people \u2013 need lifesaving humanitarian and protection assistance due to climate shocks, which include five consecutive years of poor rainy seasons, and protracted conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of those, some 3.8 million are internally displaced, and nearly five million people are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Around\u202f1.8 million children are severely malnourished, and eight million people lack access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two-thirds of all people in drought-affected areas in Somalia have no access to essential healthcare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan to meet Somalia\u2019s needs requires $2.6 billion to assist 7.6 million people \u2013 but according to the UN, the funding stands at around 15% so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: Anadolu Agency\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Origin: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/africa\/un-chief-reaffirms-support-to-somalia-s-path-to-peace-stability\/2870435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored ugc noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">View original<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0 Wrapping up his two-day visit to Somalia, the UN chief on Wednesday reaffirmed his commitment to support Somalia\u2019s path to peace and stability. \u201cLet us come together to advance peace and security, sustainable development and human rights, and build a better future for all Somalis,\u201d UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Twitter.
