{"id":11513,"date":"2022-12-23T21:06:34","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T21:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=11513"},"modified":"2023-01-07T07:15:37","modified_gmt":"2023-01-07T07:15:37","slug":"un-childrens-agency-over-20-m-children-face-severe-drought-conditions-in-horn-of-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2022\/12\/23\/un-childrens-agency-over-20-m-children-face-severe-drought-conditions-in-horn-of-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Children&#8217;s Agency: Over 20 M children face severe drought conditions in HoA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0 <\/strong>The number of children facing dire drought conditions across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia has more than doubled in five months, according to the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement issued late Thursday, UNICEF said that around 20.2 million children are now under threat of severe hunger, thirst and disease compared to 10 million in July, as climate change, conflict, global inflation and grain shortages devastate the Horn of Africa(HoA) region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs the world gets ready to welcome 2023, UNICEF urges the int\u2019l community to commit now for what might hit the HornOfAfrica next year,\u201d UNICEF Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Mohamed Fall said on Twitter on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">UNICEF said the humanitarian assistance \u201cmust be continued to save lives and build the resilience of the staggering number of children and families who are being pushed to the edge \u2013 dying from hunger and disease and being displaced in search of food, water and pasture for their livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nearly 2 million children across Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia are currently estimated to require urgent treatment for severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of hunger, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UN said the region is facing the most severe drought in \u201cmore than two generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than 2 million people have been internally displaced due to drought across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, UNICEF said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It said water insecurity has also more than doubled with close to 24 million people now confronting dire water shortages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cApproximately 2.7 million children are out of school because of the drought, with an additional estimated 4 million children at risk of dropping out,\u201d UNICEF said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It appealed for $759 million to provide life-saving support to children in 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: Anadolu Agency\u00a0 \u00a0 Origin: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/africa\/over-20m-children-face-severe-drought-conditions-in-horn-of-africa-unicef\/2771248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored ugc noreferrer\">View original<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOGADISHU &#8212;\u00a0 The number of children facing dire drought conditions across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia has more than doubled in five months, according to the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF).
