{"id":11503,"date":"2022-12-17T22:06:55","date_gmt":"2022-12-17T22:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/?p=11503"},"modified":"2022-12-24T09:46:08","modified_gmt":"2022-12-24T09:46:08","slug":"climate-change-fueling-worldwide-upsurge-in-cholera-warns-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sooha.org\/en\/2022\/12\/17\/climate-change-fueling-worldwide-upsurge-in-cholera-warns-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change fueling worldwide upsurge in cholera, warns WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>GENEVA &#8212; <\/strong>Climate change has driven an \u201cunprecedented\u201d number of larger and more deadly cholera outbreaks reported in around 30 countries this year, the World Health Organization said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The WHO said at a UN press conference that it is following cholera outbreaks in 30 countries in Africa and also an upsurge in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researchers have estimated that each year there are 1.3 to 4 million cases of cholera and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths worldwide due to cholera, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe situation is quite unprecedented, for not only are we seeing more outbreaks, but these outbreaks are larger and more deadly than the ones we have seen in the past years,\u201d Philippe Barboza, who heads the WHO\u2019s cholera and epidemic diarrheal diseases team, told journalists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnd this increasing number of cholera outbreaks is occurring after several years of regular reduction in the number of cases and deaths,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Doctors Without Borders said this year there were cholera outbreaks in refugee camps in Lebanon, Somalia and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Very visible impact of climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cholera is caused by bacteria that infect the intestines after people have consumed contaminated water or food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The symptoms are often diarrhea and vomiting, and the disease particularly threatens young children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhat is again very new since the beginning of the year and the end of last year is a very visible impact of climate change,\u201d said Barboza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMost of these larger outbreaks and the fact that they are simultaneously occurring \u2013 which makes the situation much more complex \u2013 is a direct impact of the increase in adverse climate troubles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, Barboza said, significant floods, unprecedented monsoons, and a succession of cyclones are still fueled by climate change in the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, and other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnd unfortunately, things are not going to change quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The WHO official said cholera is clearly a poverty and vulnerability disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s the most fragile part of the population in any given country which is most at risk and for a straightforward reason: it\u2019s just because they don\u2019t have access to safe water and basic sanitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cholera treatments include oral rehydration for most patients and intravenous rehydration for more severe cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Source: Anadolu Agency\u00a0 \u00a0Origin: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/europe\/climate-change-fueling-worldwide-upsurge-in-cholera-warns-who\/2765888\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored ugc noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">View original<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GENEVA &#8212; Climate change has driven an \u201cunprecedented\u201d number of larger and more deadly cholera outbreaks reported in around 30 countries this year, the World Health Organization said on Friday.
