CAIRO —<\/strong> The UN\u00a0Humanitarian coordinator for\u00a0Somalia\u00a0warned on Tuesday of a “catastrophic emergency” in the country due to the ongoing\u00a0drought.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Tuesday at a joint meeting between the\u00a0UN\u00a0and the\u00a0League of Arab States, the coordinator said\u00a0Somalia\u00a0was suffering from its\u00a0fifth\u00a0consecutive failed rainy season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end to the emergency is nowhere in sight. As we gather here today, approximately 7.8 million Somalis, and that is nearly half of its population, have been affected by the drought and nearly 1.3 million people have been displaced since January 2021, 6.7 million people are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity. That is by the end of this coming year”, said\u00a0Adam Abdelmoula,\u00a0UN Humanitarian coordinator\u00a0for\u00a0Somalia.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Arab League\u00a0secretary-general stressed the risks for the security situation in the country.<\/p>\n

“Statistics indicate that the numbers of people who are living in pre-famine or near famine conditions in Somalia have increased five times since the beginning of the year and internal displacement is still ongoing. the conflict for scarce resources is dangerously affecting peace and security for society and the political situation in Somalia”, said\u00a0Arab League\u00a0Secretary-General,\u00a0Ahmed Aboul Gheit.<\/p>\n

Nearly half of Somalia’s\u00a015\u00a0million people are affected by food insecurity.<\/p>\n

Since January 2021 that\u00a01,3\u00a0million people have been forced to abandon their homes.<\/p>\n
